You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. Sensitivity to cultural values is a fundamental skill in patient-centered care. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures. Respect for these perspectives supports trust and therapeutic relationships.

Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Modern healthcare systems increasingly recognize the importance of culturally informed policy decisions. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve. Global health leaders must adapt strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations.

In this Assignment, you will examine a global health issue and consider the approach to this issue by the United States and by one other country. Comparative analysis encourages deeper awareness of how policy shapes health outcomes.

To Prepare:

• Review the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global health agenda and select one global health issue to focus on for this Assignment. Current WHO priorities include chronic disease prevention, maternal health, and infectious disease control.
• Select at least one additional country to compare to the U.S. for this Assignment. Choosing a nation with a different healthcare system can highlight meaningful contrasts.
• Reflect on how the global health issue you selected is approached in the U.S. and in the additional country you selected. Thoughtful reflection will support clearer policy comparisons.
• Review and download the Global Health Comparison Matrix provided in the Resources. The matrix offers a structured framework for organizing research findings.

Focusing on the country you selected and the U.S., complete the Global Health Comparison Matrix. Organized presentation of information will strengthen the quality of your analysis.

Be sure to address the following:

1. Consider the U.S. national/federal health policies that have been adapted for the global health issue you selected from the WHO global health agenda. National policies often reflect political priorities and available resources. Compare these policies to the additional country you selected for study. Effective comparisons rely on credible and current sources.
2. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each policy. Balanced evaluation requires attention to both intended benefits and unintended consequences.
3. Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the global health issue you selected. Public health outcomes are closely connected to education, income, and living conditions. Be specific and provide examples. Real-world illustrations make analysis more persuasive.
4. Using the WHO’s Organization’s global health agenda as well as the results of your own research, analyze how each country’s government addresses cost, quality, and access to the global health issue selected. Governments often balance these three factors in different ways based on national priorities.
5. Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the health of the global population. Policy decisions in one nation can influence regional and international health trends. Be specific and provide examples.
