\nThis assignment will develop writing and analysis skills using real-world data in a
\ncase study format. It will assess how well you understand and can communicate the
\ndifferent factors influencing economic growth over the long run. You will be required
\nto submit an essay based on a case study of long-run economic growth in one country
\nof your choice. You are free to choose any country except for the countries on this list
\n(as these have been covered to a greater or lesser extent in class):
\n1. Sweden
\n2. Argentina
\n3. Chile
\n4. Spain
\n5. Japan
\n6. United Kingdom
\n7. Northern Ireland
\n8. China

\nWhile you are free to choose any other country you wish for your analysis, you should
\nbe mindful of data availability before you choose a country to ensure adequate data
\nis available to complete the assignment.
\nCriteria for Assessment
\n\u2022 Essays should make full use of empirical evidence (using Our World in Data or
\nother sources), theoretical support (covered in the course e.g. the Solow Model
\nand its extensions) and relevant literature to identify, describe and understand
\nthe proximate and ultimate causes of long-run economic growth in your
\nchosen country over the last 100 years (approx.).
\n\u2022 Essays should demonstrate a clear understanding of the relevant course
\ncontent and the ability to critically evaluate the material. Excellent essays will
\ndo this in a way that goes beyond the course content and reading materials.
\n\u2022 In doing this, you are free to use comparative analysis (comparing to other
\ncountries in the past or contemporaneously).
\n\u2022 The final section before the conclusion should provide some policy
\nrecommendations for government or development bodies to increase or
\nmaintain the rate of economic growth. These recommendations should be
\nbased on your analysis.
\n\u2022 Writing should be clear and concise and the essay should be logically
\nstructured. The word count is intentionally low to encourage clear and concise
\nwriting and discourage the inclusion of less relevant material. As the quote
\ngoes, \u201cI wrote you a long letter because I didn\u2019t have time to write you a short
\none\u201d.
\n\u2022 The essay should have a standard structure in that it should contain an
\nintroduction, conclusion, correct referencing and a bibliography.
\nThe essay will be assessed holistically based on the elements above and the QUB
\nConceptual Equivalents scale.
\nYour first draft should not be your submitted essay. Please make sure to revise and
\nredraft a number of times before final submission. This will greatly improve the
\nquality of your writing. The best advice on writing that I ever received was to \u201cwrite
\nwithout fear, edit without mercy\u201d.
