The patient had a history of depression and anxiety, and I wanted to ensure that her sexual orientation was not contributing to her mental health symptoms. The interview took place in a private room at the outpatient clinic, and I ensured that the patient felt comfortable and safe throughout the conversation.

Prejudices and Biases:
Initially, I was nervous and anxious about asking the patient about her sexual orientation. I was worried about how she would respond and if I would say something offensive or inappropriate. I also had some personal biases and assumptions about LGBTQ+ individuals, which I had to acknowledge and set aside before the interview. However, I reminded myself that it was essential to provide non-judgmental and compassionate care to the patient and that her sexual orientation was a critical aspect of her overall health.

Managing Anxieties and Biases:
To manage my anxieties and biases, I reviewed my own attitudes and beliefs towards sexuality and gender identity. I also read literature on best practices for conducting psychiatric interviews with LGBTQ+ patients. I ensured that I had a non-judgmental and supportive attitude towards the patient, and I asked open-ended questions to allow the patient to share their thoughts and feelings openly.

Assumptions about People with Mental Illness:
Before this clinical experience, I assumed that LGBTQ+ individuals with mental illness faced additional challenges and discrimination due to their sexual orientation. However, through this experience, I learned that sexual orientation was only one aspect of the patient’s overall health, and that providing compassionate and non-judgmental care was essential for all patients, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Awareness Development:
Through this clinical experience, I developed a deeper understanding of the importance of acknowledging and addressing sexuality and gender identity in psychiatric interviews. I also became aware of the challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals with mental illness face and the need for healthcare providers to provide inclusive and supportive care.

Impact on Advanced Nursing Practice:
This clinical experience has reinforced the importance of providing compassionate and non-judgmental care to all patients, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. As an advanced practice nurse, I will ensure that I am knowledgeable about best practices for providing care to LGBTQ+ individuals and that I am able to create a safe and supportive environment for all patients. I will also advocate for policies and practices that promote inclusivity and reduce discrimination in healthcare settings.

After studying Module 7: Lecture Materials & Resources, discuss and reflect on the following: Create a 5-7 minute video using Canvas Capture.
