\nPublic Health Foundational Knowledge Toolkit (PHFK Toolkit)
\nTo document meeting the Public Health Foundational Knowledge competencies, you will create
\na personal Public Health Foundational Knowledge Toolkit for use in your academic and
\nprofessional experiences.
\nEach toolkit must address the following CEPH Foundational Knowledge objectives:
\nProfession & Science of Public Health
\n1. Explain public health history, philosophy, and values. Identify the core functions of
\npublic health and the 10 Essential Services.
\n2. Explain the role of quantitative and qualitative methods and sciences in describing and
\nassessing a population’s health.
\n3. List major causes and trends of morbidity and mortality in the US or other community
\nrelevant to the school or program.
\n4. Discuss the science of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in population health,
\nincluding health promotion, screening, etc.
\n5. Explain the critical importance of evidence in advancing public health knowledge.
\nFactors Related to Human Health
\n1. Explain the effects of environmental factors on a population’s health.
\n2. Explain biological and genetic factors that affect a population’s health.
\n3. Explain behavioral and psychological factors that affect a population’s health.
\n4. Explain the social, political, and economic determinants of health and how they
\ncontribute to population health and health inequities.
\n5. Explain how globalization affects the global burdens of disease.
\n6. Explain an ecological perspective on the connections among human health, animal
\nhealth, and ecosystem health (e.g., One health)
\nThis is an overarching assignment for this course where you submit a section of your toolkit for
\nModules 1-5 via CANVAS as a module assignment. Toolkits may be created in Word,
\nPowerPoint, Canva, or Google Docs as a website or a media file. APA citations must be used per
\ntopic as appropriate. Creativity and original thought is encouraged. APA format and writing
\nconventions must be followed. A Public Health Foundational Knowledge Toolkit rubric is
\nposted in CANVAS as a guide for you as well as for grading purposes.

\nCreate concept maps\/diagrams\/graphics\/ figures\/tables that clearly document meeting the
\nModule #2 Health Learning Objectives below:
\nMO1: Distinguish one’s health from population health.
\nMO2: Recognize how environmental factors impact population health. MO3: Examine how
\nbiological and genetics affect population health.
\nMO4: Describe how behavioral and psychological factors can affect a population’s health
\nMO5: Define the social, political, and economic determinants of health.
\nMO6: Analyze the role of health determinants in population health and health inequities. MO7:
\nEvaluate how globalization affects global burdens of disease.
\nMO8: Utilize an ecological perspective to recognize the connection between the health of people,
\nanimals, and the ecosystem.
\nYou must include all 8 Module Objectives in your graphic.
\nThe PHFK Toolkit is graded with the Public Health Foundational Knowledge Toolkit Rubric.
\nThis rubric is divided up per module PHFK Toolkit assignment, with a final submission
\nevaluated using the entire rubric. Students have the opportunity to edit and improve their PHFK
\nToolkit module assignments via weekly feedback. Students are expected to submit their PHFK
\nToolkit and or parts of their PHFK Toolkit to prove meeting the Public Health Foundational
\nKnowledge objectives.
