\nThe proposed course is communication among nurses. The course will involve 11 modules that the students will cover over 11 weeks. Students learning the communication course will not require any prior knowledge of communication. The role of communication is to enhance personal relationships with other healthcare workers and patients. Effective communication can eliminate the errors, misunderstandings, and barriers that undermine the quality exchange of information. Developing trust through empathy can help nurses create a conducive environment for timely and quality care. Nurses should learn to share information or communicate using both verbal and non-verbal communication. While the healthcare environment is growing rapidly, healthcare organizations are embracing technologies that require advanced communication skills.
\nStudents are responsible for developing a personal development plan to identify their current status in terms of knowledge and communication skills. The personal approach will help the learners to grow their communication skills. Students will take personal assessment tasks to improve their competence in communication.

One of the learning outcomes of communication is to demonstrate critical and innovative thinking. Another outcome is to learn oral, written, verbal, and visual communication. The focus is to ensure students learn how to share information with other healthcare workers and communicate with patients. Students should learn how to communicate in the healthcare system in the 21st Century. The purpose is to ensure students learn how to use complex systems to share information.
\nStudents will learn the selection of words in verbal and written communication. The selection is based on the intended message and the risk of misinterpretation. Learners should understand the risks of misunderstanding and how it can trigger medical errors.
\nThe learning should comprise the ability to provide constructive feedback. Nurses provide feedback to other nurses or physicians. Feedback can impact the quality of care since it affects the ability to build rapport. Developing trust through empathy can help nurses create a conducive environment for timely and quality care.
\nCommunication involves verbal and non-verbal communication. Student nurses should learn the skills of facial expressions while communicating with nurses. Students should learn how to develop friendly facial expressions while communicating with nurses. Nurses should not scare the patients when they learn about their medical condition.
\nLearning should help the students to understand the ethical and legal implications. The information the nurses acquire from the patients should remain confidential. Maintaining confidentiality will help the learners to stick to the legal and ethical issues in communication.<\/p>\n
The rationale for the Course
\nHealthcare workers should engage with various professionals in the healthcare system to achieve quality outcomes. Communication is essential since it determines patient outcomes and collaboration. The communication course is important in the healthcare program. Communication affects the level of coordination to share roles, describe patient\u2019s conditions, and share notes.
\nNurses have a responsibility to demonstrate quality communication skills. Establishing a healthy relationship with the patients is essential to foster trust and quality relationships. For example, nurses should establish trust, courtesy, sincerity, and kindness. Learning communication skills helps the nurses to acquire quality information from the patients. One of the nursing goals is to establish individualized care and establish a healthy relationship with the family members.
\nNurses should learn communication channels they should utilize to deliver information to the patients, family members, and other healthcare workers. The healthcare environment is an improvement with the advent of complex technologies. For example, physicians, nurses, and pharmacists have to collaborate to prescribe accurate medication. Nurses have a responsibility to maintain healthy, timely, and accurate communication to avoid medical errors. Studies show that lack of communication can increase the risk of medical errors.
\nThe rationale is to meet a healthcare worker from one healthcare organization to talk about communication in the healthcare environment. The professional will share real examples of communication, how to improve it, common barriers, technologies, and how to develop continuous improvement.
\nEvaluation of Outcomes
\nThe course evaluation will comprise different strategies to ensure the successful acquisition of communication skills in nursing. One of the evaluation methods is class participation. Learners\u2019 participation in class will comprise 10 percent of the entire grading. Students\u2019 participation will help them to learn communication skills and ask questions. The second method will be weekly tests on various modules. The grading will comprise 30 percent of the grading. Weekly tests will comprise class discussions and essays. The learning will use a standard rubric. Students will form groups of at least four to six people. The groups will enable the students to form discussion groups. The discussion groups will accomplish a project in cumulative steps. Each group will select a topic but seek approval from the professor.
\nThe evaluation will comprise two major tests, including the midterm exam and the end-of-term exam. The midterm exam will comprise 50 multiple choice questions on different modules. The main exam will cover all the modules.
\nPractical tests will be used to evaluate the ability to communicate in a real healthcare environment. It will assess the general ability of the students to communicate. Students will formulate examples of real patients and healthcare workers. Communication will help the students to apply the lessons acquired throughout the modules.
