He hasn’t looked at the Lecture Blackboard Assessment Brief page yet, but is wondering what he has to do for class this week. Jason writes Dr. Martin the following email:
From: Jason Mitala <jman_iamalegend_allbowbeforeme@netscape.com>
Date: Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at 12:04 AM
To: Meredith Martin <mmartin@syr.edu>
Subject: Yo yo yo

Hey Teach –
I’m new!
Sooo… what’s due this week????
-S

What course policies did Jason fail to follow? What should Jason have done instead?
(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO B:
Elina, a PSY205 student, has lived with and managed an anxiety disorder for most of her life. She is experiencing significant stressors this semester and her anxiety has started to become less manageable. This week Elina was unable to complete the WTL assignment. Elina would like to ask for an extension.
Is she eligible for an extension? What should Elina do?
(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO C:
It’s a few minutes before Recitation and Enoch, a PSY205 student, needs to submit his Research Skills Module assignment before class starts. His computer is running slow and he’s worried he won’t get it in on time, so he quickly emails his assignment to his TA and CC’s Professor Martin.
What course policy has Enoch violated? What might Enoch have done instead?

(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO D:
Emily is in PSY205. She really enjoys the discussions she has in Recitation and learning from her classmates. Today, they were discussing something very personal for her. She thought she was prepared to talk about it when they started, but found that it became increasingly difficult as class went on. When one of her groupmates expressed an especially ignorant view and her TA did not correct them, Emily became upset enough that she needed to step out of Recitation. Emily’s decision to step out of the classroom to take a breather was a good one, but what should Emily do next?

(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO E:
Kim is taking PSY205 this semester with her roommate, Alexa. Kim finished her Participation in Research (PiR) Option B papers and submitted them to the Lecture Blackboard Assessment Brief page. The following week, Alexa is still struggling to understand the assignment and asks Kim for help. They discuss it and Alexa asks if she can look at Kim’s Option B paper just to see an example of how it should look. Kim thinks, “I’ve already submitted it, so no big deal,” and lets Alexa see her assignment. Later next week, Kim finds out that Alexa copied her assignment and submitted it as her own! The TA is filing an academic integrity report based on Alexa’s cheating.
Why will Kim also be getting an academic integrity violation report? What should Kim have done differently?
(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO F:
Minnie is signed up in SONA to complete a research study. The study requires an online interview in Zoom. When Minnie follows the Zoom link she was sent, she enters a Zoom meeting, but no one is there. Minnie waits about 10 minutes. Then she double checks her confirmation email. Yes, this is the correct time and the correct link. She emails the experimenter, but doesn’t hear back. After 15 minutes with no one showing up, Minnie leaves the experiment.
Who should Minnie contact about this? How should she contact this person?
(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO G:
Lilli is in PSY205 and living off campus. It is the week of Exam #2. Unfortunately, she found out today that she has tested positive for COVID-19. She feels fine and (thankfully!) has no symptoms, but she will need to isolate for five days beginning immediately. Will Lilli qualify for a make-up exam? What should Lilli do?
(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO H:
Mecca is in PSY205. She loves attending Recitation each week. Today, Mecca wakes up with a stuffy nose, fever, and a sore throat. She has Recitation later this afternoon. She knows that she will be working with her group on their research project and that there is a graded Exit Ticket today.
What should Mecca do? Can she still get credit for the Exit Ticket?

(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO I:
Rebecca is taking PSY205 this semester and currently has an A in the class. It’s time for Exam #3 and she has until this evening at 8:00pm to finish it. Rebecca has had a really rough week. She certainly never intended to wait until the last minute to finish the exam. Rebecca was over at a friend’s house, but it’s only 5:30pm and she has plenty of time to drive the ten minutes home and take the exam. Unfortunately, on the way, Rebecca gets in a minor car accident. Everyone is ok, but her car is damaged and she had to spend the rest of the evening dealing with the situation.
Will Rebecca qualify for a make-up exam? How might this affect Rebecca’s grade in this course?

(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO J:
Elaheh, a PSY205 student, worked really hard on her Research Skills Module assignment. It took hours. She submitted it two days ahead of the deadline.
A week later, Elaheh sees their assignment grade is a zero. Confused, Elaheh emails her TA to ask why she received a zero. Elaheh’s TA asks for her submission confirmation from Blackboard Assessment Brief. Elaheh looks everywhere, but can’t find it. She must have forgotten it! Elaheh has “proof” that she completed the assignment well ahead of the deadline though.
Can Elaheh email the assignment to her TA instead? Will she get an extension on the assignment? What should Elaheh have done instead? How will this impact her grade?
(1)
(2)
(3)

SCENARIO K:
Kriti is a PSY205 student. She loves the course and is usually a pretty good student. She’s been attending Lecture and Recitation, taking notes, doing the readings, and generally doing everything Dr. Martin suggested to be successful. Despite all this, Kriti took the first exam and did much worse than she expected. Now Kriti is feeling really worried about her grade and isn’t sure what to do.
What PSY205 resources are available to Kriti and how can she access them? What resources are available to Kriti OUTSIDE of PSY205?

(1)
(2)
(3)

______________________
PSY205 – Spring 2024 Extra Credit #1 – Answer Key

Scenario A:

(1) Jason failed to follow multiple course policies outlined in the syllabus (pg. #).

Email etiquette: The syllabus likely specifies appropriate communication channels with instructors and TAs, and Jason’s email falls short of professionalism (pg. #).
Blackboard Assessment Brief utilization: The syllabus likely details how to access course materials on Blackboard Assessment Brief, and Jason should have referred to it before contacting the instructor (pg. #).

(2) Instead of his email, Jason should have:

Checked the course Blackboard Assessment Brief page for announcements, assignments, and due dates (pg. #).
Contacted the course TA during office hours or via email with professional communication (pg. #).

Scenario B:

(1) Elina may be eligible for an extension, depending on the specific circumstances and the instructor’s discretion (pg. #).

(2) Elina should:

Review the syllabus policy on extensions (pg. #).
Contact Professor Martin as soon as possible to explain her situation and request an extension (pg. #).
Provide documentation to support her request, if applicable (e.g., doctor’s note) (pg. #).

Scenario C:

(1) Enoch violated the submission policy outlined in the syllabus (pg. #).

Emailing assignments directly to instructors or TAs is likely not permitted (pg. #).

(2) Enoch should have:

Submitted his assignment through the designated platform, such as the course Blackboard Assessment Brief page (pg. #).
Contacted his TA if he encountered technical difficulties (pg. #).

Scenario D:

(1) Emily’s decision to step out of the classroom was appropriate to manage her emotions (pg. #).

(2) Next, Emily should:

Talk to her TA privately after class to discuss the situation and her concerns (pg. #).
Utilize campus resources such as the Counseling Center if she needs additional support (pg. #).

Scenario E:

(1) Kim will also receive an academic integrity violation report because she shared her assignment, which constitutes a violation (pg. #).

(2) Kim should have:

Refused to share her assignment with Alexa, explaining the academic integrity policy (pg. #).
Directed Alexa to the appropriate resources for completing the assignment independently (pg. #).

Scenario F:

(1) Minnie should contact the research experimenter to report the issue (pg. #).

(2) She can contact the experimenter via email, using the information provided in the study recruitment materials (pg. #).

Scenario G:

(1) Lilli may qualify for a make-up exam depending on the instructor’s policy and the documentation provided (pg. #).

(2) Lilli should:

Contact Professor Martin immediately to explain her situation and request a make-up exam (pg. #).
Provide documentation of her positive COVID-19 test (pg. #).

Scenario H:

(1) Mecca should not attend Recitation to avoid spreading her illness to others (pg. #).

(2) She can contact her TA to inquire about alternative ways to participate in the class activities and potentially receive credit for the Exit Ticket (pg. #).

Scenario I:

(1) Rebecca may not qualify for a make-up exam due to missing the deadline without a valid excuse (pg. #).

(2) This incident could negatively impact her grade depending on the weight of the exam and the instructor’s discretion (pg. #).

Scenario J:

(1) Elaheh cannot email the assignment to her TA at this point, as submissions must go through the designated platform (pg. #).
