\nCASE STUDY: Family Member with Alzheimer\u2019s Disease: Mark and Jacqueline
\nMark and Jacqueline have been married for 30 years. They have grown children who live in another
\nstate. Jacqueline\u2019s mother has moved in with the couple because she has Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
\nJacqueline is an only child and always promised her mother that she would care for her in her old
\nage. Her mother is unaware of her surroundings and often calls out for her daughter Jackie when
\nJacqueline is in the room. Jacqueline reassures her mother that she is there to help, but to no avail.
\nJacqueline is unable to visit her children on holidays because she must attend to her mother\u2019s daily
\nneeds. She is reluctant to visit friends or even go out to a movie because of her mother\u2019s care needs
\nor because she is too tired. Even though she has eliminated most leisure activities with Mark,
\nJacqueline goes to bed at night with many of her caregiving tasks unfinished. She tries to visit with
\nher mother during the day, but her mother rejects any contact with her daughter. Planning for the
\nupcoming holidays seems impossible to Mark, because of his wife\u2019s inability to focus on anything
\nexcept her mother\u2019s care.
\nJacqueline has difficulty sleeping at night and is unable to discuss plans even a few days in
\nadvance. She is unable to visit friends and is reluctant to have friends visit because of the
\nunpredictable behavior of her mother and her need to attend to the daily care.

\nJacqueline’s sense of role performance in this situation is one of caregiving, responsibility and duty towards her mother who has Alzheimer’s disease. She feels obligated to fulfill her promise to care for her mother in her old age as she is her only child. This sense of role performance is causing her to prioritize her mother’s care over her own needs, interests, and responsibilities, which is taking a toll on her physical, emotional, and social well-being.<\/p>\n
Jacqueline may be contributing to her own health issues in several ways. Her inability to focus on anything else other than her mother’s care is causing her stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. She has limited time for herself, is unable to sleep properly, and has limited social interaction, which is affecting her physical and emotional health. The constant demand of caregiving, combined with her mother’s unpredictable behavior, is taking a toll on her overall well-being. Additionally, the lack of leisure activities, limited sleep, and constant stress can lead to physical health problems such as fatigue, burnout, depression, and other health issues (National Institute on Aging, 2021).<\/p>\n
