Student-Led Religious Groups:

Student-led religious groups are organizations formed and managed by students within a school setting. These groups aim to foster a community based on shared religious beliefs and practices. Activities may include prayer groups, scripture study, service projects, or discussions on faith-related topics. Importantly, these groups are initiated and led by students, with adult supervision typically limited to ensuring order and safety [1].

Source:

[1] Anti-Defamation League. The First Amendment and Religious Freedom in Schools:

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees the freedom of religion, encompassing both the free exercise of one’s faith and the free speech to express one’s religious beliefs. This protection extends to students in schools, allowing them to practice their religion individually and collectively [2]. However, the application of this principle differs between public and private schools due to the concept of separation of church and state.

In public schools:

The Equal Access Act mandates equal treatment for all student-initiated groups, including religious ones. Public schools must provide access to facilities and resources for these groups on par with other student organizations [3].
However, school officials cannot endorse or promote any specific religion. Prayer groups, for example, cannot be led by faculty or school-sponsored [4].
In private schools:

Private schools have greater autonomy and can set their own policies regarding religious activities. They may choose to align with a specific faith tradition or maintain a more secular environment [5].
Sources:

[2] First Amendment Center. (n.d.).
