Children have the right to be emotionally and physically safe from harm at
\nall times. This booklet is designed to assist people who come into contact with
\nchildren and who are required by law, to report concerns of child abuse and\/or
\nneglect. These people are referred to as Mandated Noti\ufb01ers.
\nIn South Australia, a child is legally de\ufb01ned as a person under 18 years of age.
\nThe protection and safety of children is a fundamental responsibility of families
\nand the communities in which they live.
\nThe state has a mandate to intervene in family life when there is suspicion,
\non reasonable grounds, that a child is at risk. Under the Children\u2019s Protection Act
\n1993, this mandate is the responsibility of Families SA, part of the Department
\nfor Families and Communities.
\nThe object of state intervention is to work in partnership with the child,
\nthe family and other agencies in order to:<\/p>\n
ensure that all children are safe from harm
\nensure, as far as is practicable, that all children are cared for in
\na way that enables them to reach their full potential and<\/p>\n
promote caring attitudes and responses towards children among
\nall sections of the community.
\nThis will:<\/p>\n
ensure that the need for appropriate nurturing, care and protection
\n(including protection of cultural identity) is understood, that risks
\nto wellbeing are quickly identi\ufb01ed and any necessary support,
\nprotection or care is promptly provided to those at risk<\/p>\n
recognised the family as the primary means of providing the
\nappropriate nurturing, care and protection of children and<\/p>\n
support and assist the family to meet its responsibility to children.
\nChild abuse and\/or neglect transcend all social classes and cultural barriers.
\nThe effects can be traumatic and long lasting, not only for the victims, but
\nalso for their whole family and the community at large.
\nThe South Australian Children\u2019s Protection Act 1993 requires a range of
\npeople to notify the Department for Families and Communities, Families SA
