If your course has 5 or more students enrolled, you will be asked to engage in discussion with your classmates. (Note: if your course has less than 5 students enrolled, you will not be required to engage in discussion with your classmates, rather you will be writing an essay response to the discussion question. Your instructor will let you know at the beginning of your course if you will be required to engage in discussion with your classmates or if you need to write an essay.)

The guidelines for participation below detail expectations for discussion participation. NOTE: some expectations may change for some weeks, depending on the discussion questions. Be sure to read any weekly updates or clarifications.
• Students must post an initial response to the question(s) by 1159 pm Central time on Wednesday. If there are more than one question, an initial post must be composed for each question, unless directed otherwise.
• Students may not be able to see others’ initial post until they have submitted their initial post.
• In the initial post, students are expected to cite the weekly reading to demonstrate understanding and application of the content. It is not necessary to reference literature other than the assigned readings but students can certainly do so.
• After the initial post, students are expected to participate in a conversation (with other students focusing on the question(s) and the initial responses. After the initial post, students do not have to reference the readings (however, please appropriately cite if taking information from the readings or other outside sources). Frame the follow-up posts as if students were in a face-to-face class and having a small group discussion.
• Students are expected to contribute a minimum of 2 responses to the conversation during the week (after the initial post) which must be posted by Friday at 1159 pm Central time. Note that contributing a response will not necessarily equate to earning all the points for discussion. The instructor looks for quality of the posts and not just quantity.
• Although you are only required to post two responses to classmates, you are encouraged to read all student posts for the week and to strive to extend the conversation (sharing and learning) when possible.
• The discussion board closes at 1159 pm Saturday and no posts after that time will be considered for grading purposes.
• Students must post directly to the discussion board (not as an attachment).
• Post lengths are as follows:
• Your initial post should be around 200 words. This is sufficient verbiage to respond to the question/s in a thoughtful manner. Remember, focus on quality vs. quantity, strive not to exceed 200 words in your posts. (Be focused, clear and concise in your response.)
• Responses to classmates should be around 100 words. Again, strive to be focused and concise in your responses.
