General Instructions
on Essay Writing: 
Write an essay that is a minimum* of 1000 words in length for
ONE of the essay prompts below. DO NOT use quotes in your essays. Do not include
the essay question itself in your essay answer. Identify the word length of
your essay by placing the word length next to the essay number at the top of
the essay (Essay # 1, word length 1024). 
Do not use a cover page nor abstract.
*If an essay
has fewer than 1000 words, its score will
be multiplied by the proportion of its length to the minimum of required length
to calculate its score.
Do not plagiarize or use anyone else’s work– intentionally or unintentionally.

Sources to Consult to Write Your
Essay
To write your essay, consult your class
lectures, course power points, textbook, Module materials, Mindtap materials
and EchoVideos.  You may use additional news stories, from the
sources listed below. If you find an article/video clip/film/website you
want to use but it is not listed below,
you must EMAIL ME in Canvas with the source’s URL and receive my approval
before using it.
Approved
outside news sources: the CIA handbook, the UN website, the EU website,: The New York
Times, the BBC, the Christian Science Monitor, Vox.com, PBS, NPR, The
Economist, The Washington Post.
Use of any
non-approved outside materials
(including Wikipedia) will result in an
automatic grade of “zero” for your essay.

In-Text Citations and References Page

Use
in-text citations for all information/points you state that are not generally known. These
in-text citations do not count for
the essay word length.
For in-text citations use the following
abbreviations for course materials:

For the textbook, use (K&B, pp. #),

For power-point Echo-video lectures, use (EV M #, V
#)—meaning Echo Video lecture Module number, Video number

Apply Course Concepts/Theories in
Your Essay  (THESE WILL BE ADDED BY
4/16/16)
In your
essay, use/apply a minimum of 15
concepts/terms/theory you have learned in Modules
Four, Five, Six and Seven.  A list of the concepts/terms/theories you
should understand are listed below. Use these concepts in a meaningful
way so that I can be sure you understand each concept/term/theory and you can use it appropriately.  Simply including the name of a concept or
theory isn’t sufficient evidence of this.  For those terms you use explicitly, bold the term each
place where you use it in the essay. For terms you use without explicitly
identifying them, place each term in parentheses at the end of the sentence(s)
where you apply it (term). In-text notation of the terms used does not
count for the essay word length.
Writing Style and Format
For each essay, write using the “active”
(not “passive”) voice, use complete sentences, cohesive paragraphs,
and appropriate word usage, punctuation, grammar and spelling. 
Review the two documents–one on writing an essay and the second on
what is and isn’t plagiarism— taken from Purdue University’s On-line Writing
Lab posted in this Exam Module. Go to
the Purdue OWL website to review the rules on writing cohesive paragraphs,
writing with an “active” not passive voice, and writing using correct
word usage, punctuation and grammar.
The format
of your essay should be as follows:
First) an introductory
paragraph presenting a thesis statement
that responds to the essay question;
Second) the essay body that has a number (three or
four?) of cohesive paragraphs. In each of these paragraphs a sub-point is
presented providing evidence and explanation supporting the essay’s thesis
statement (presented in the introduction). 
The sub-point statement is typically presented in the first one or two
sentences of the paragraph and the remainder of the paragraph presents the
evidence and explanation supporting the sub-point; and
Third) a conclusion in which the sub-points are
tied together to refer back to and address the essay’s thesis statement
presented in the essay’s introductory paragraph.
Essay Prompt # 2 – Discuss the following questions in one
coherent essay; how you organize it is up to you. Make sure you and your classmate friends do not select the
same essay question to answer.
