Learning centers in early childhood classrooms engage students in independent learning that helps them stay engaged and on task. Student engagement in the learning will also create a positive learning environment.

Based on any three content areas, create a plan for five learning centers focused on a theme (zoo animals, farm, space, etc.) for a Pre-K to Grade 3 classroom.

Each learning center plan will be 200-250 words and include:

Developmentally appropriate activity that is engaging for students, promotes creativity, and is aligned with state standards.
Directions for the volunteers to oversee the center’s activity, including guidance for enhancing student learning and well-being.
A list of required materials and the purpose of each.
At least one center must include the use of technology to engage and support creative thinking.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
Learning Center 1: Zoo Animals
Activity: Create Your Own Zoo
Students will use various materials such as construction paper, glue, scissors, and markers to create their own zoo. They will have the opportunity to research and learn about different animals found in zoos and then create their own versions of these animals using the materials provided.

Directions for volunteers:

Encourage students to research different animals they would like to include in their zoo.
Provide support and guidance to students as they work on creating their animals.
Help students to label their animals and the zoo with the name of the animal and where they can be found in the wild.

Learning Center 2: Farm
Activity: Build a Farm
Students will use various materials such as blocks, play-doh, and farm animal figurines to build their own farm. They will have the opportunity to learn about different farm animals and their characteristics.

Directions for volunteers:

Encourage students to research different farm animals and their characteristics
Provide support and guidance to students as they work on building their farm
Help students to label their farm with the names of the animals and where they can be found on the farm.

Learning Center 3: Space
Activity: Build a Rocket
Students will use various materials such as cardboard, paint, markers, and other craft materials to build their own rocket. They will have the opportunity to learn about different planets, stars, and other space-related concepts.

Directions for volunteers:

Encourage students to research different planets and stars
Provide support and guidance to students as they work on building their rockets
Help students to label their rockets with the name of the planet or star they are exploring

Learning Center 4: Zoo Animals
Activity: Virtual Zoo
Students will use a computer or tablet to explore a virtual zoo. They will have the opportunity to learn about different animals, their characteristics, and where they can be found in the wild.

Directions for volunteers:

Provide students with guidelines on how to use the virtual zoo
Help students to navigate through the virtual zoo and find different animals
Encourage students to take notes and research more about the animals they find.

Computer or tablet
Virtual zoo website
Notebook
Learning Center 5: Farm
Activity: Farm to Table
Students will use various materials such as play-doh, play food, and farm animal figurines to learn about the process of how food is grown on a farm and how it ends up on their plate.

Directions for volunteers:

Encourage students to research different farm animals and their characteristics
Provide support and guidance to students as they work on building their farm
Help students to label their farm with the names of the animals and where they can be found on the farm.
