Introduction
This clinical experience focuses on the role of community health nurses in occupational health settings. Through observation at an occupational health clinic, nursing students can apply course concepts to better understand workplace health issues and the nursing role in prevention. By addressing the learning objectives and required readings, this experience aims to prepare students for population-focused nursing practice addressing the needs of working communities.
Description of the Nursing Role in Occupational Health
As described by the American Nurses Association (2016), nurses play a vital part in promoting worker wellness. In occupational health clinics and on-site work environments, nurses work to identify health risks and mitigate hazards. Through education, screening programs, and policy recommendations, nursing interventions target disease and injury prevention (CDC, 2021). The goal is to support employee health and safety.
Current Workforce Trends in the United States
Recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2022) shows shifts in modern employment, such as a rise in contract and temporary positions. While offering flexibility, such precarious work often lacks stability and access to benefits. Community health nurses advocate for protections to support all workers’ physical and mental health regardless of employment status (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017).
Examples of Work-Related Illness and Injury

Common occupational health issues include musculoskeletal disorders from repetitive motions, infectious diseases from animal or human contact, toxic exposures to chemicals and particulates, and mental health conditions from workplace stress (CDC, 2021). Regulatory agencies like OSHA and NIOSH conduct surveillance and enforce standards to prevent such foreseeable risks (NIOSH, 2022).
Application of the Epidemiological Model
Examining occupational health issues through an epidemiological lens, as outlined in the required readings, allows for consideration of multiple causative factors. Biological, chemical, environmental, and psychosocial hazards each contribute to work-related illness and must be addressed through a multi-pronged public health approach (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017).
Conclusion
This clinical experience and associated coursework will prepare nursing students to recognize occupational health needs. By applying concepts like epidemiology, students can better partner with workers and employers to promote safety and well-being.
