Parent Education and Family Life Education Fields

Parent education and family life education (FLE) are two related but distinct fields that aim to equip and empower family members to develop knowledge and skills that enhance well-being and strengthen interpersonal relationships through an educational, preventive, and strengths-based approach (NCFR, 2020). Parent education focuses on the specific role of parents in fostering positive individual and family development, while FLE covers a broader range of topics that are relevant to individuals and families across the lifespan, such as human growth and development, human sexuality, interpersonal relationships, family resource management, family law and public policy, and more (NCFR, 2020).

Both parent education and FLE are grounded in the discipline of family science, which applies various theories, frameworks, and perspectives to understand the structures, functions, dynamics, and interactions of families in different contexts. Some of these core theories/frameworks/perspectives include family systems, ecosystems, individual and family development, exchange, symbolic interaction, conflict, feminist, and stress (NCFR, 2020). Parent educators and FLE professionals also consider the cultural variations, demographic trends, historical issues, work/leisure balance, and societal relations that affect families and individuals in diverse ways (NCFR, 2020).

Parent education and FLE are both practice-oriented fields that require competencies in teaching and curriculum development for different audiences and settings. Parent educators and FLE professionals may work in various sectors such as education, health care, social services, government, non-governmental organizations, faith-based organizations, or private practice. They may design, implement, evaluate, or advocate for programs that address the needs and challenges of families and individuals in different stages of life. They may also conduct research or disseminate information on best practices and evidence-based interventions for enhancing family well-being (NCFR, 2020).

Parent education and FLE are both regulated by professional standards and ethics that guide their practice. One way to demonstrate these standards and ethics is to obtain the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) credential through the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), which is the nationally recognized standard in FLE. The CFLE credential validates a professional’s experience and knowledge as a parent educator or FLE professional based on the 10 FLE content areas (NCFR, 2020).

In summary, parent education and FLE are two fields that share a common goal of promoting healthy family functioning through education and prevention. They differ in their scope of topics and audiences but overlap in their theoretical foundations and practice skills. Parent educators and FLE professionals can benefit from obtaining the CFLE credential to enhance their credibility and competence in their respective fields.
