Sociology of Social Movements: Exploring Topics like the Black Lives Matter Movement, MeToo Movement, Environmental Activism Movements

Social movements are organized efforts by large numbers of people to bring about or impede social, political, economic, or cultural change (Britannica, 2021). Sociologists study social movements to understand the nature and extent of the change they seek, the factors that influence their emergence and development, the strategies and tactics they employ, and the impact they have on society and individuals. In this paper, I will explore some of the topics that sociologists have examined in relation to three contemporary social movements: the Black Lives Matter movement, the MeToo movement, and the environmental activism movements.

The Black Lives Matter Movement

The Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) is a global movement that emerged in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teenager, in Florida. The movement aims to combat anti-Black racism, police brutality, and systemic oppression of Black people in various domains of society. The movement uses various forms of protest, such as marches, rallies, sit-ins, die-ins, boycotts, and online campaigns, to raise awareness and demand justice and accountability for the killings of Black people by law enforcement and vigilantes. The movement also advocates for policy changes and reforms that address racial disparities and discrimination in areas such as education, health care, criminal justice, and economic opportunity.

One of the topics that sociologists have analyzed in relation to the BLM movement is the role of social media in amplifying its message and mobilizing its supporters. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have been used by activists and allies to share information, express solidarity, coordinate actions, document events, and challenge dominant narratives. The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter has become a global rallying cry and a symbol of resistance against racial injustice. According to a study by Freelon et al. (2018), between 2013 and 2016, there were more than 40 million tweets using #BlackLivesMatter and related hashtags, making it one of the most popular social movement hashtags in history. The study also found that social media users engaged in various forms of discursive activism, such as framing, counter-framing, identity construction, storytelling, and agenda setting.

Another topic that sociologists have explored in relation to the BLM movement is the intersectionality of race and gender. Intersectionality is a theoretical framework that examines how multiple social identities and forms of oppression interact and shape people’s experiences and outcomes. The BLM movement has been criticized for being dominated by cisgender heterosexual men and for marginalizing the voices and experiences of Black women, queer people, and transgender people who are also affected by anti-Black violence. In response to this critique, some activists have created sub-movements within BLM that highlight the specific issues and challenges faced by these groups. For example, #SayHerName is a campaign that was launched in 2014 by the African American Policy Forum to draw attention to the cases of Black women and girls who have been killed by police or died in custody. The campaign aims to challenge the erasure of Black women from the discourse on police brutality and to honor their lives and stories (Crenshaw et al., 2015).

The MeToo Movement

The MeToo movement is a global movement that emerged in 2017 after a series of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein sparked a wave of public revelations by women who had experienced similar abuse by powerful men in various industries and sectors. The movement aims to expose the pervasiveness and impact of sexual violence against women (and men) in society and to demand accountability and justice for survivors. The movement also seeks to challenge the culture of silence, shame, and complicity that enables perpetrators to escape consequences and to empower survivors to speak out and seek support.
